Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

DMV

The Department or Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a U.S. state-level government agency that is generally responsible for vehicle registration and issuing driver’s licenses.

In some states or counties, the DMV goes by a different name, and not every DMV provides the same services. However, DMV has become a colloquial term that nearly every American associates with driver licensing and vehicle registration.

A DMV-equivalent can be found in every state, except for Hawaii. In Hawaii, local governments are responsible for the usual DMV tasks.
