Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL)
An Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) is a type of state-issued driver’s license and ID card issued that contains a machine-readable barcode and radio frequency identification (RFID) chip to facilitate border crossings.
If you have a federally-approved EDL, you can use it to re-enter the U.S. when traveling by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. However, it cannot be used for international air travel.
Currently, you can only get an EDL in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington state.
To apply for an Enhanced Driver’s License, you must visit the DMV or Secretary of State’s office (depending on where you live) in-person and show:
- Your Social Security card
- Proof of citizenship (birth certificate or passport)
- Proof of identity
- Proof of residency
- Payment for the application fees (varies by state)
