Proof of citizenship

Proof of Citizenship

Proof of citizenship is any government-issued document that is considered valid for use to establish an individual’s U.S. citizenship. The most commonly used proof of citizenship documents are:

  • Birth certificates
  • Naturalization documents
  • U.S. passports
  • Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA)

You will need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when applying for many different government-issued IDs, such as a driver’s license or REAL ID, or when you sign up for certain government or social programs.
