Marriage Records

Marriage records are vital records of marriages that have occurred and are filed with and maintained by each state’s Vital Records Office. Marriage records are considered public records and can be accessed by anyone.

In the past, marriage records were commonly kept by churches and local governments, usually by the clerk of the town or county where the bride lived. So, you can often find older marriage records, or records of intent to marry, by contacting religious organizations or local governments, and historical societies.
