Divorce Certificate

A divorce certificate is a document issued by the state health department or Bureau of Vital Statistics stating:

  • That the person named is divorced
  • The names of both parties involved
  • The date and place of the divorce

A divorce certificate is not the same as a divorce decree, and not all states even issue them.

However, they can be used for some, not all, official purposes. For example, you can generally use a divorce certificate to change your name on your IDs and other documents, or just show proof of your divorce

You can contact the vital records office in the state where the divorce was finalized to get a copy if they are offered in that state.
